Painting, and a new video!

After the camouflage it was time to pick out the details.

Fortunately most of the pioneer tools and other parts are able to be taken off the model for just for this situation. I try to make everything as accessible as possible for easy painting.

I started off with base painting all of the tracks, tools, radio, periscopes and some rubber parts with Model Color Black Grey 70.862. I find that using straight black is quite harsh and some of the detail is lost to the dark color.

I then painted the base of the wooden parts with Model Color Tan Yellow 70.912. Once that was dry I covered the surfaces with Burnt Umber oil paint, then preceded to wipe it off with a stiff brush moistened in white spirits . The result I was left with was a nice two toned wood color and the oil paint had left behind streaks that resembled wood grain. This was used for the folding seat bases, handles of tools, the cleaning rods and the block.

The engine, transmission and wires were done with a few different metallic paints. Model Color Steel 71.065 and Black 71.057 and from Tamiya Dark Iron XF-84 and Metallic Grey XF-56. I wanted some variation in the metal parts to give them a bit of life.

I have had a pot of Citadels Mournfang Brown forever and I find it gives a lovely rich leather looking color which I used for the tool and ammunition straps with steel for the buckles.

I have also found that Vallejo Brown 71.105 is a great match for the handle of the bolt cutters as it has a rich dark red tint in it.

Finally I used Field Grey XF-65 from Tamiya for the seat covers and for the ammo pouches, and dry brushed them with Buff XF-57 which finished up the detailing.

I will now be moving on the most fun part of the painting process, weathering!

I have a large range of weathering products all of which I will be going over in my next video, so keep an eye out for that and thanks for stopping by!.
