The Batwing is finished!

Updated: Apr 9, 2023

After 2-3 months of work I have finally completed the model of the Batwing, complete with cockpit fibre optic lights , LED exterior lights and a scratch built base with switches for the lights.

This is the first project I have done using lights and also the first aircraft I have made, I had a huge amount of fun with this project and it gives me great confidence going forward to do these kinds of projects in the future.

There are two circuits in this model joined together to use one power supply, there are nine LED's in total and 30-40 fibre optic strands. the base houses two switches, one controlling the cockpit lights and one for the outside lights.

I made a base to replicate where the Batmobile is parked in the Batcave, as I have no reference to where the Batwing is kept in the movie so this seemed to be the obvious choice. It is made of MDF wood, foam board and a metal rubbish bin.

The wires come out of the landing gear and into the base to the two switches, one of which is made to replicate one seen in the Batwing cockpit with black and yellow stripes.

I have designed things so that the Batwing can detach from the base and this allows me to in the future place the Batmobile on it if I decide to make one......

The Batwing itself was made out of the box with a few scratch built parts in the cockpit and it's armament. As I have it displayed with the landing gear down I decided to add some detailing to the gear bays and doors.

It was then primed, preshaded, painted black-grey and weathered using thinned white paint sprayed on each individual panel. Sealed in a semi-gloss.

I couldn't be happier with it, I grew up with Keaton's Batman and the vehicles in it are very iconic to me, and when I saw this in my local model shop it was a MUST have and I knew if it was going to be made then it needed lights.

I will be adding a full gallery of photos over in the photo gallery in the coming days and also a full build video will be going up on my YouTube channel, so please head on over can check it out.
